Varicose Veins Cause
Causes of Varicose Veins
We don't
really know what actually causes varicose veins, however there are two main
theories around the subject: Descending
valvular incompetence which means that the valve at the top of a vein stops
working properly allowing pressure to distend the section of vein below
it. This action stretches the vein's
wall, making it varicose.
The other theory revolves around the vein wall. The amount of collagen,
which gives strength, and the quality of the elastin, which gives elasticity, can
be abnormal in the leg veins of those who develop and suffer from varicose
veins. There is some thought that the
possible weakening of the vein wall causes varicose veins, however studies are
not conclusive.
Troubles Associated with Varicose Veins
The
troubles caused by varicose veins are multiple.
Many people with varicose veins are never troubled with symptoms at all,
or, if they do occur, they're more of a nuisance than medically serious. There are only a small portion of people with
varicose veins who ever develop ulcers or other problems which cause damage -
and preceding these events, there are always precursors and warnings. However, there are some problems associated
with varicose veins which we will explore here:
Cosmetic Embarrassment is probably the most wide spread and common problem of varicose
vein sufferers. This is very
understandable in a society that encourages and reinforces beauty and lovely
legs. The concern about physical attributes
can lead people to fear that any minor symptom or pain in their legs can be
varicose veins.
Often
people seek medical attention because they fear they will eventually have
varicose veins. While the warning signs may
not even be there, this fear and worry also present a problem for people.
Aching and discomfort and a feeling of heaviness in the legs is a common complaint,
especially if a person has been standing for long periods of time. Some people with varicose veins experience
itching or have tenderness in their legs - all of which become much worse
at the end of the day. Putting the feet
up at the end of the day can be a very effective way to experience relief,
however these symptoms don't necessarily mean the individual has varicose
veins. Not all symptoms are indicators
of the affliction, and those with varicose veins must realize that even though
they have them, not all pains are due to varicose veins. Often veins are blamed for pains which they
don't induce.
Try alleviating the aching and itching associated with
varicose veins by wearing support stockings when standing for long periods of time.
