Size Counts
Right Fit
The most important consideration when purchasing support hose is to make sure you get the right fit. If the hose are too small, the compression they supply will be greater than that listed on the package. The converse is also true: buying support hose in too large a size creates a situation in which the compression will be less than that stated by the manufacturer.
Different Measurements
The various brands and models of support hose may require different measurements. That means that in addition to knowing your compression range, you have to base the type of measurements you'll need on what type of stockings you choose, such as knee, thigh, or waist-high stockings.
Lowest Range
The lowest range of compression hosiery doesn't require any special leg measurements. For the knee-high styles, size can be determined according to shoe size, and weight and height measurements are sufficient for choosing the correct size for the thigh and waist-high models. Most brands will carry sizing information on the packaging.
Most Crucial
In the other ranges of compression, choosing the right support hose will require the measurements of your ankle, thigh, and waist, depending on the style of hose you pick. Measurements are taken in inches and the ankle measurement is the most crucial. The ankle is the point where compression needs to be highest in order for you to receive the full benefit of the stockings.
If you find that your calf, thigh, and waist measurements correspond to more than one size, choose the size that fits with the measurement taken from the area of your ankle with the largest circumference, usually at the site of the ankle bone. It's best to take measurements first thing in the morning and even better to take them while still in bed, since standing up causes the swelling to start up which may result in an inaccurate measurement.
Limited Strength
The higher the compression range, the more likely it is that you will find it difficult to pull on your support hose. This is even truer for those who have limited hand motion or strength. The simplest method is to start with the heel pocket out. Diagrams showing how to put on the stockings are available on support hosiery manufacturer's websites.
Caring for your stockings isn't difficult. Wash them in a washing machine, but hang dry the stockings to keep them going strong. Use a mild detergent to preserve your investment for as long as possible.
