Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

Advanced Technology

Thanks to the advent of laser technology, ultrasound and less invasive techniques, treatment for varicose veins no longer means a hospital stay or a long recovery. Self-help measures along with less invasive techniques allow varicose veins to be dealt with on an outpatient basis. It is important to remember that neither surgery nor sclerotherapy can prevent new varicose veins from developing. This is a progressive and chronic condition for which there is no permanent cure.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy was thought to be more effective with smaller veins and spider veins. In this procedure, small and medium sized varicose veins are injected with a solution which scars and causes the vein to close. Several injections into the same vein may be required and after a few weeks the vein fades. Even though multiple injections may be required, if done correctly, sclerotherapy is effective. It does not require anesthesia and can be done in a doctor's office or clinic.

Sclerotherapy Plus

A more recent development is ultrasound guided sclerotherapy which is both a safe and effective way to deal with varicose veins which traditionally would have required surgery. Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy can now offer a more cost effective and less traumatic method of gaining control over varicose veins.

The key element of the success of this UGS procedure is duplex ultrasound. Initially, the diseased saphenous vein - the large vein which carries blood from the groin to the ankle - is located and then the duplex ultrasound sclerotherapy (DUS) acts as the guide for the placement and the number of injections which are necessary for each individual patient. The success of the procedure is confirmed by a follow-up DUG examination. The DUS will also confirm if additional treatment is required.

The proper and accurate control of all backward flow points (reflux) is necessary for successful treatment by surgery or sclerotherapy. Experienced practitioners who are able to accurately identify and target veins using DUS enjoy a high treatment success rate.

Varicose Veins Can Be Controlled

Varicose vein disease is a chronic condition and is not curable. Like other chronic ailments, such as diabetes, or high blood pressure, it requires monitoring and ongoing care. Unpleasant complications of varicose veins can be averted by early treatment. By seeking counsel from your specialist to determine the best course of treatment for yourself, and by continuing with self-help measures once you've gained control of the situation, you can go on to live life managing your vein health effectively.
